Raptor Rescue, Rehabilitation, and Release

September 14th, 2024

At this gathering, we got a look in to what it takes to rescue and rehabilitate raptors from Dr. Kim Ammann. Ammann walked us through what it takes from the time an injured bird is reported, what the care looks like, to the final release back in to the wild.

After the presentation, the event concluded with live music from Between Howls.

Hunting and Hops

July 25th, 2024

With our partner, Brickfield Brewing, we learned about the history of trapping and hunting fur-bearing wildlife. With an emphasis on trapping and the Fur Trade era, presenter Christian Cold provided an in-depth (and non-judgmental) exploration into the values, motivations and ethical responsibilities that influence individuals who trap, hunt and fish. Cold is a retired wildlife technician and educator, as well as a licensed falconer; the presentation included live, native birds of prey.

Nature’s Labratory

May 4th, 2024

The community came together to learn about foraging, herbal medicine, and traditional ethnobotany from Master Alchemist, Heather Mashuga and The Friendly Forager, Tanna Worrell. We heard about the Heritage Area and Carpenter Nature Center’s programs, enjoyed refreshments and a delicious tea made from locally foraged ingredients.

Some participated in the Make & Take Class by
Herbalist Heather Mashuga after the program to try their hand at making herbal tinctures!

Our Northern Forests

October 7th, 2023

We spent the afternoon celebrating the northern forests of Wisconsin at the Douglas County Wildlife Area & Bird Sanctuary. There we  learned about the logging and forestry industry, the Heritage Area, and what’s happening in northwest Wisconsin from Douglas County forester, Logan Jones, in “Forestry: Past, Present, Future.”
