Fly Fishing 101

Have you ever wanted to learn how to fly fish but don’t have gear? Are you beginning your fly fishing journey but can’t quite nail a perfect cast? Let Wild Rivers Conservancy and the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway reveal the mysteries of fly fishing to you! By the end of this dry land course, you’ll have all the knowledge you’ll need to catch your first fish on the fly! Thanks to a grant from the National Park Foundation, we will provide all the necessary equipment and teach you the basics such as knot tying, fly casting, wading safety, fish species identification, regulations & ethics. All you need to bring is a positive attitude, weather-appropriate clothing and water bottle! This course is recommended for 13 years old and older. Meet your instructor: October Yates is an avid outdoorsman throughout the midwest. He has been kayaking and fishing since his youth, and adventured up and down the coast from Washington to Alaska. He now resides in the St. Croix valley and has years of experience guiding people throughout his favorite places along the Riverway.

With help from the National Park Foundation, we’ll have everything your family needs to catch your first fish. Learn fishing basics such as equipment use, fish species identification, fishing regulations & ethics. You’ll even get to try out some Junior Ranger Angler activities! All you need to bring is a positive attitude, weather-appropriate clothing and a water bottle! This event is open to all families and first-time anglers. No fishing license? No problem! Program participants will be allowed to fish at this event without a license for CATCH and RELEASE, due to an educational fishing license waiver with MN DNR. Meet your instructor: October Yates is an avid outdoorsman throughout the midwest. He has been kayaking and fishing since his youth, and adventured up and down the coast from Washington to Alaska. Solar Jar Natural Dyeing Workshop
Presented by Gammelgården Museum of Scandia at Gammelgården Museum Scandia, MN
This two-hour class will include eco printing with steam and fresh botanicals on mordanted bandanas. While the steam sets the cloth, participants will learn how to use the same fresh botanicals to create solar dye jars, which they’ll take home with them. At the end of class, participants will unveil the completed eco-printed cloth and take home a unique eco-printed bandana as well. Class Fee: $55, which includes all tools, materials, and instruction from a Textile Center teaching artist. The registration link will be posted in mid-April. Water & Stone: Geology on the St. Croix Paddle

The geologic story of the St. Croix River is rich with history and one of the best ways to see for yourself is from the seat of a kayak. Join us as we paddle along this stretch of geologic importance where we’ll witness the iconic Dalles of the St. Croix and learn how water and stone have come together to create this natural beauty. Meet your Wild Rivers Conservancy Paddle Guides! Owen has been planning and leading events as the Outdoor Program Coordinator at the Conservancy since 2024. Previously he has worked as an outdoor guide leading canoe and backpacking expeditions throughout North America, and as an adaptive ski instructor in the mountains of Colorado. He is a certified Wilderness First Responder and trained in risk management for a multitude of outdoor settings. October is the Conservancy's Outdoor Program Specialist and an avid outdoorsman throughout the midwest. He has been kayaking and fishing since his youth, and adventured up and down the coast from Washington to Alaska. He now resides in the St. Croix valley and has years of experience guiding throughout his favorite places along the Riverway. Details: This is a fully supported paddle. You will be provided with kayaks, paddles, and PFDs, as well as a shuttle service from your vehicle to start the paddle. Music in the Park - Flannel Brothers

The Flannel Brothers originally formed in October 2015 and kicked off their first performance at Tin Bins in Stillwater, MN in January of 2016. The band has an incredible following that has had them performing at restaurants, wineries, breweries, paddle boats, bars, private parties and more ever since. The Flannel Brothers are almost guaranteed to bring 10% more joy to your day, night and life than if you had not attended one of their shows (we believe this to be a scientific fact... but studies are still confirming this information). They do this through three-part harmonies, guitars, mandolins, percussion and infectious grooves and performances that you will both FEEL and REMEMBER!!
