Environmental and Health Harms of AI Data Centers in Wisconsin

Amy Barrilleaux is communications director for Clean Wisconsin, the state’s oldest and largest environmental advocacy group. She oversees Clean Wisconsin’s external communications strategy, including media relations, public affairs, video production and social media, and she serves as the organization’s spokesperson. Amy also hosts The Defender, Wisconsin’s environmental podcast. Amy has served on the national Public Affairs Council of the American Water Works Association and was also chair of the Image and PR Committee of the Wisconsin Section of the American Water Works Association. She has been a frequent speaker about source water protection and crisis communication at conferences across the region and country, including the U.S. Water Alliance One Water Summit, the Symposium on Water Research for Wisconsin, Midwestern Legislative Conference, and Mid-America Regulatory Conference. Amy has worked as an award-winning journalist in television, print, radio news, and she leans on that vital storytelling experience every day to engage new audiences around the importance of protecting our environment. A Louisiana native, Amy spent her childhood summers fishing with her father in the lakes, bays and bayous of the Pelican State. She currently serves on the board of directors of the River Food Pantry in Madison. She lives in Madison with her husband, daughter, son, cat and dog, and, true to her Louisiana heritage, enjoys cooking and eating. Program is accessible on the RFPL Facebook or YouTube page. Sunrise Prairie Hike (CANCELLED)

Fall is the best time of year to experience the fullness of the prairie. We will be hiking on mowed trails with gently rolling terrain. Bring your binoculars, water, and dress for the weather. Hope to see you there! 3~ Walking moderate distances with some steps and/or stairs and standing. This course is led by Lynette Anderson Lynette is involved with both programming and land management at Belwin Conservancy. She enjoys creating walks and talks that showcase the great work being done to restore native habitat for all the critters and plants. She also gets to be involved with the work that creates the habitat, which she loves. Each day holds something different for her. Some days she is working with her body on the land, some days she does reconnaissance for a program, some days she works with volunteers, and some days, nights or evenings she gets to lead a group to some amazing phenological event happening on Belwin property.

Heaven and Nature, A Poetry Reading by Thomas R. Smith

Join us in person at the River Falls Public Library or virtual on the virtual on the RFPL Facebook or YouTube page for a poetry reading by local Author, Thomas R. Smith's latest book. The evening will wrap up with an open mic session. Attendees can sign up for five minute time slots the night of the event. Heaven and Nature poems Thomas R. Smith Heaven and Nature brings together the natural world, the transcendent world of human eros, and the contradictory beauty of our mortality. In the midst of an array of narratives and reflections, the poet is keen to highlight glimmers of a paradisal element in our experience. Part one, “Wild Belonging,” takes us through a seasonal cycle—birds, insects, and plants observed near the Kinnickinnic River in western Wisconsin. Part two, “Stay,” celebrates the transitory nature of the lives we mourn, both public figures (Jack Kerouac and Rachel Carson are two) and personal friends held in memory. Inevitably, these poems also memorialize vivid shared moments of personal history. In part three, “Heart Jukebox,” the poet returns to the world of immediate experience: the “magnificent here and now.” Artists and musicians are celebrated, inspirations as varied as a rural sculptor, a young bluegrass band, a foreign film star, and the Beatles. A handful of poems of mature love conclude the section. Amid the ebb and flow of seasons and relationships, with its losses, dissonnances, and disappointments, the book sustains a steady undercurrent of joy. Mystery Youth Writing Contest Celebration and Rebecca Ansari Author Visit

On Thursday, October 22, the library will host ALA Notable Book author Rebecca Ansari! Celebrate local young authors and learn more about Rebecca's writing process and journey from being an ER doctor to author. The author visit will be the final event in our young authors’ writing contest based on Rebecca Ansari’s middle-grade novels "The Missing Piece of Charlie O'Reilly" and "The In-Between". You do not need to participate in the writing contest to attend the event. Writing contest entries are due by Friday, October 9. Entries can be submitted in person or at 2026 Youth Writing Contest Registration Form.

Community Trunk or Treat

Bring the whole family to Salem Lutheran Church & School for a free Trunk or Treat in Stillwater. Kids in costume can go from trunk to trunk in our parking lot collecting candy from church and community volunteers, who decorate their vehicles for the occasion. Everyone is welcome, whether or not you're part of Salem, and there's no cost and no registration for trick-or-treaters. Just show up between 2 and 4 PM. Nordic Lullabies and Nightmares invites you to step into a world where traditional music carries both light and shadows. Experience traditional songs from Sweden, Iceland, and other Nordic countries, both sung and played on the nyckelharpa, a centuries-old Nordic instrument. These melodies move between light and shadow, and some have been passed down as folktales that try to inspire sleep, comfort, and a wee bit of Nordic angst and existential dread. Registration encouraged but not required. This program was funded by the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund, also known as Legacy Funding.

Join us on October 29, 2026 for poetry and community! Arrow Broken Poetry Collective is honored to welcome Mona Susan Power as our featured artist. Mona Susan Power is the author of four books of fiction, including The Grass Dancer (a National Bestseller awarded a PEN/Hemingway Prize), Roofwalker (a collection of stories and essays awarded the Milkweed National Fiction Prize), Sacred Wilderness (a novel which received the Electa Quinney Award), and A Council of Dolls (winner of the Minnesota Book Award and High Plains Book Award, longlisted for the National Book Award and the Carol Shields Prize). She's a graduate of Harvard College, Harvard Law School, and the Iowa Writers' Workshop. She is also the recipient of several grants in support of her writing which include an Iowa Arts Fellowship, James Michener Fellowship, Radcliffe Bunting Institute Fellowship, Princeton Hodder Fellowship, USA Artists Fellowship, McKnight Fellowship, and Native Arts and Cultures Foundation Fellowship. Her short stories and essays have appeared in numerous publications and anthologies including The Best American Short Stories series, The Atlantic Monthly, The Paris Review, The Missouri Review, Ploughshares, and Granta. Mona is an enrolled member of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe (Iháŋktȟuŋwaŋna Dakhóta), born and raised in Chicago. During her childhood she was a member of the Chicago Indian Village movement, a group organized to protest the conditions of Native people lured to urban areas with promises of secure jobs and good housing, that seldom materialized. The Life We Bury, The Guise of Another, The Heavens May Fall, The Deep Dark Descending, The Shadows We Hide, Nothing More Dangerous, The Stolen Hours, Forsaken Country, Saving Emma, and his latest novel, The Quiet Librarian. He is the recipient of the Barry Award, Minnesota Book Award, Left Coast Crime Award, and Silver Falchion Award and has been a finalist for the Edgar® Award, Thriller Award, Anthony Award and Nero Award. His books have been translated into 23 languages. Allen has a journalism degree from the University of Minnesota and a law degree from Hamline University. After law school, he studied creative writing in the M.F.A. program at Minnesota State University-Mankato, as well as the Loft Literary Center and the Iowa Summer Writer’s Festival. Allen grew up in the hills of central Missouri. He now lives with his wife, Joely, in greater Minnesota where he recently retired after practicing criminal law for 25 years.
