You don’t need to be an artist to enjoy your time in the studio. This stress-free atmosphere provides an opportunity to practice your skills while connecting with others. We will explore both outdoor and indoor spaces and learn from each other. While working on-site, we will offer encouragement, constructive critique, and knowledge sharing to ensure you don't feel lost or uncertain about what to do. You'll benefit from the comfort of being around other creative individuals. Treehaus Studio was designed for interdisciplinary work. If you have questions about materials, tools, or would like to tour the space feel free to contact us. To get juices flowing, we have a few miles of wooded bluff hiking onsite!

These tours provide great views of local wildlife and the opportunity to hear lumber-era stories from your scenic VIP seat! You will see eagles, herons, egrets, cormorants, islands, turtles, and a lumber-era cave. No experience is necessary. Includes: 90-minute guided river tour, lesson, safety overview, all gear, transportation to and from the water, snack, and water. Price per adult and children 12 and over: $55. Belwin Bison Festival

On Saturday, May 16, Belwin will host its annual Bison Festival, celebrating the release of the 2026 NorthStar Bison herd onto the Bison Prairie. This beloved event includes food trucks, live music, eco-art, a 5K “Run with the Bison” Fun Run, and more. The festival will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Lucy Winton Bell Athletic Fields (15601 Hudson Road N., Lakeland, MN 55043). Fun Run check-in begins at 9:00 a.m. Tickets are sold per car. They can be purchased in advance on a sliding scale of $10, $20, or $35 at belwin.org/bisonfest. Bison have been a cornerstone of Belwin’s restoration work since 2008, when NorthStar Bison partnered with Belwin to bring them to the prairie. Bison are a keystone species, helping to create a healthy habitat for plants and wildlife. Each spring, hundreds of visitors from across the Twin Cities and eastern Wisconsin gather to witness their release onto Belwin’s 130-acre Bison Prairie.

Honoring the Buffalo Pipe Ceremony with Kevin Smokyday

Cost: FREE Join us to honor and welcome the Buffalo to Belwin with a pipe ceremony led by Kevin Smokyday at Belwin Conservancy on Saturday, May 16 from 8:00–10:30am. We will gather at 2612 St. Croix Trail S, Afton, MN 55001 for the ceremony with a feast to follow. All pipe bearers are invited to bring their pipes. All Indigenous community members and trusted partners are welcome, and invited to bring any sacred items, as well as a dish to share. This is a free event, but we request you register so we can best prepare for the refreshments and parking arrangements. We recommend you consider carpooling as parking is quite limited at the site. All registration for this event will close at 5:00 PM on Monday, May 11. Please contact Hannah Brithón (651-478-9075) or Kevin Smokyday (651-392-5012) with any questions. Please note: This event is separate from the Belwin Bison Festival and Bison Release. Sketching in Nature Workshop
Presented by Franconia Sculpture Park at Franconia Sculpture Park Shafer, MN
Sketching plants or fungi directly from nature deepens observations and awareness of our subjects, ourselves and of our relationships with nature. With guidance from natural science illustrator and artist Vera Ming Wong, explore techniques for capturing gesture, shapes and forms of native plants in a restored prairie, while gaining insight into the characters and ecological niches of various species. Materials provided, but you’re welcome to bring your own favorites. This activity is made possible by a grant from the Hugh J. Andersen Foundation and by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.

Steamboats, Towboats, and River History

Please stop in and explore the history of our waters. We have nearly 1300 photos playing on 5 screens of Steamboats, Towboats, Logging, Ferries, Bridges, and general river history. Artifacts from the St. Croix river bottom. Real equipment from the towboats industry. Models from early 1900s vessels. A river fire in Hastings, MN. What is a wing dam? The history of the Prescott Spinner Company from 1920 to early 1940s is on display. Pilot licenses, stories, articles and more. And next summer 2026 we will continue our successful River History Speaker series, all 5 this summer were smash hits, the only thing our attendees asked for was more. So next summer we hope to offer 8 speakers to our offerings for Friday nights. And who knows what will come in the door tomorrow as people continue to bring us more items, stories, and more river related materials.
