River Falls: 250 Years Ago

1776 TWO WORLDS, ONE YEAR When Americans declared independence in 1776, the future River Falls area was not an empty frontier waiting to be settled. It was part of a living Indigenous landscape-a shared homeland and borderland where Dakota (Sioux) and Anishinaabe/Ojibwe (Chippewa) peoples maintained deep connections to the land and waterways of the St. Croix Valley. While revolution transformed Britain's Atlantic colonies more than 1,000 miles to the east, the Kinnickinnic and St. Croix valleys remained part of a long-inhabited Indigenous landscape. The community known today as River Falls would not be founded for another seventy years.

Film screening “A Black Heart Unbroken”

Local filmmakers chose this historic setting for their macabre tale…A woman on the run from her dark past finds refuge at a creepy inn filled with broken things, run by a reclusive innkeeper with an unnatural desire to destroy what is not already broken. Now you can be part of the audience where the film was made! Please join us for a free screening of “A Black Heart Unbroken” on Saturday, September 26 at the Warden’s House Museum at 602 N. Main Street in Stillwater. Screenings will begin at 7:00 and 8:00pm. Guests can enjoy popcorn and lemonade, plus a tour of the museum. Imprints - 2026 Autumn Featured Artists CAB Art’s House Gallery We are pleased to welcome the work of three new featured artists to Art’s House Gallery this autumn. The soft pastel work of Lorie Spiegel, photographic portraits of Miguel Joven, and the functional ceramics of Katie Reeves all seem to echo the transitory qualities that permeate the air this time of year in Wisconsin and Minnesota. Each artist renders their varied media with tender, contemplative care resulting in imagery that feels as if it may just slip away with the season. Hurry in to Art’s House Gallery before it’s gone! Creative Darning and Mending with Riley Kleve

Presented by Gammelgården Museum of Scandia at Gammelgården Museum Scandia, MN

Students can bring some of their own clothes to darn and mend using tools and supplies provided by instructor Riley Kleve. Students will learn to select materials, use various tools, and care for mended and darned clothing in class. Students will leave with new techniques for beautiful mends that add color, pattern, and durability to their clothing. Schedule: During this short class, students will get an introduction to methods of mending and darning that bring individuality to their clothing. There will be a balance of lecture, demonstration, and hands-on practice! For an additional $20, students have the option of bringing a mending disc home to continue their repairs. Prerequisites/Skill Level/Age Requirements: No prior experience required. Ages 18+ Register on EventBrite to guarantee your spot! Cancellation Policy: Up to 3 weeks before the event – 50% refund. Under 3 weeks before the event, no refunds. Riley Kleve is a nonbinary textile artist and educator creating collaborative work in community-led settings. Their work in weaving, handspinning, and embroidery draws from history to create a queerer vision for the future of textiles. Some recent highlights include weaving felted pins and inviting viewers to name them based on gender feelings they evoke, creating a co-woven tapestry with over 110 attendees at a dusk-till-dawn arts festival, and facilitating drop-in LGBT craft nights. Riley has a self-directed BA in craft from Hampshire College and is a 2024-26 Resident Artisan at North House Folk School.

Artifacts from the St. Croix river bottom. Real equipment from the towboats industry. Models from early 1900s vessels. A river fire in Hastings, MN. What is a wing dam? The history of the Prescott Spinner Company from 1920 to early 1940s is on display. Pilot licenses, stories, articles and more. And next summer 2026 we will continue our successful River History Speaker series, all 5 this summer were smash hits, the only thing our attendees asked for was more. So next summer we hope to offer 8 speakers to our offerings for Friday nights. And who knows what will come in the door tomorrow as people continue to bring us more items, stories, and more river related materials.

Unforgotten Washington County Stories from the Korean War

The Korean War (1950–1953) is often called the “Forgotten War,” overshadowed by World War II that ended just five years earlier. But in Washington County, it is anything but forgotten. Becoming Witness

Presented by A House Unbuilt at A House Unbuilt Stillwater, MN

A House Unbuilt invites the public to the opening reception for Becoming Witness, a collection of map-inspired pieces and hand-made ceramic vessels by Matt Dooley. This new body of work is an invitation to shift perspective from an aerial view to one of grounding and connection, “becoming witness” to our surroundings once again. The “map view” that we are all so familiar with has become an increasingly common way to interact with our environment. While ubiquitous, such a view can encourage a false sense of separation between ourselves and our environment, reducing it to a concept, making it ripe for objectification, manipulation, and control. From this perspective, we assume a position of authority, looking down, all seeing, in-control, as if we were God. Map-inspired pieces on the wall of the gallery tell a story of environmental exploitation, whereas hand-made ceramic vessels draw viewers to the floor, encouraging a sense of connection and grounding. Through this dropping down, Dooley hopes that we can begin to dissolve the sense of separation between ourselves and all things, encouraging an attitude of care, connection, and love for the places in which we live. Join us for the opening reception August 28, 6-8pm, refreshments will be provided and Dooley will give an artist’s talk. We also invite you to join us for a series of guided meditations in the gallery led by artist and yoga teacher Matt Dooley. With Shadow Puppetry a form that elicits the fantastic, the humorous in a magical and fun filled way. Welcome to Shadow Puppetry! Shadow Puppetry is an ancient yet contemporary form of animation. Using cut silhouettes, light, a screen and sound, students will learn basic puppet fabrication techniques, develop content with the goal to create a short table top Shadow Play for an in-class performance. Author Talk and Book Signing – Eric Dregni “Vikings in the Attic”

Hear author Eric Dregni make a presentation about writing his book, Vikings in the Attic: In Search of Nordic America. In his book, Eric tracks down and explores the significant — often bizarre — historic sites, tales, and traditions of Scandinavia’s peculiar colony in the Midwest. Eric reveals the little-known tales that lie beneath the surface of Nordic America and proves by example why generations of Scandinavian-Americans have come to love and cherish these tales and traditions so dearly. After the presentation, Eric will be available for signing copies of his book which are available for purchase in the museum’s gift shop, the Scandia Butik. Eric Dregni is an associate professor of English at Concordia University in St. Paul. He is the author of several books, including Midwest Marvels (2006), In Cod We Trust: Living the Norwegian Dream (2008), and Never Trust a Thin Cook (2009), all published by the University of Minnesota Press. During the summer, he is the dean of the Italian Concordia Language Village in northern Minnesota. He lives in Minneapolis. Art Gallery Exhibition This fall, Belwin is hosting a gallery exhibition, Worlds Within Worlds, featuring the work of painter Suyao Tian. In this exhibition, Suyao Tian will presents a series of abstract, water-based paintings that respond to the natural rhythms and quiet presence of Belwin. Worlds Within Worlds is ultimately about connection — between visible and invisible realities, between humans and nonhuman life, between imagination and memory, and between the intimate and the infinite. Every system, being, memory, landscape, or form contains another hidden world inside it — layered, interconnected, and continuously unfolding. Suyao Tian’s artistic language is deeply shaped by her childhood experiences growing up as a single child during China’s one-child policy in the 1980s. “Cultural expectations and a highly competitive, exam-oriented education system emphasized memorization over critical thinking and imagination, affecting both school and family life for an entire generation. For me, the absence of siblings, the inability to have pets, and limited social interaction led to isolation and a lack of confidence. Nature became my primary source of communication and emotional expression. As a child, I spent time collecting small insects, placing them in jars, talking to them, and playing with them—they became my earliest listeners.” This exhibition will be on view at Belwin's Savanna Center at 795 Indian Trail S.
