Unforgotten Washington County Stories from the Korean War
Presented by Washington County Parks at Washington County Historic Courthouse Stillwater, MN
The Korean War (1950–1953) is often called the “Forgotten War,” overshadowed by World War II that ended just five years earlier. But in Washington County, it is anything but forgotten. Eleven local men were killed in action during the war, and their stories continue to live on in the memories of families, friends, and the community they left behind. Their service, sacrifice, and experiences form a powerful chapter in our shared history. Visit the Washington County Historic Courthouse to explore an exhibit that brings these stories to life.

The Land of Everlasting Sky
Presented by Stillwater Public Library at Stillwater Public Library Stillwater, MN
For fans of the PBS series Finding Your Roots, The Land of Everlasting Sky is a compelling memoir about how land connects us all—and how, if we are to mend our relations to each other and the earth, we must first reckon with our past. As the descendant of Swedish immigrants who homesteaded on what had been Red Lake Reservation, Jill Swenson returned to where her mother grew up on Lake of the Woods after she died to discover the descendants of Kakageesick, an Ojibwe spiritual leader Jill had met as a child, had been dispossessed of their great-grandfather's allotment in 2012. The program will include a visual presentation about reckoning with the past and a short reading from the memoir. Books will be available for purchase from Valley Bookseller after the event. The Land of the Everlasting Sky
Presented by Stillwater Public Library at Stillwater Public Library Stillwater, MN
Join author Jill Swenson for a presentation and discussion of her memoir The Land of Everlasting Sky. Exploring family history, land, and identity, Swenson reflects on her Swedish immigrant roots and the legacy of settlement near the Red Lake Reservation near Lake of the Woods. "When Jill Swenson returns to her mother’s hometown after her funeral, she finds a new Seven Clans Casino under construction in Warroad, Minnesota, on Lake of the Woods. There, she learns, Red Lake Nation has recently dispossessed descendants of Ojibway spiritual leader Kakaygeesick from their land—land where the family has lived for the last two centuries—and has also denied them tribal membership. In searching for answers, Jill meets the great-grandson of Kakaygeesick. Over weeks, months, and years, a friendship forms between them, and Jill gradually discovers what allotments, blood quantum, and the history of the Bureau of Indian Affairs have to do with her, the great-granddaughter of immigrants who homesteaded on reservation land. Estranged from her father, still mourning the suicide of her husband and the loss of their farm in upstate New York, and now grieving her mother’s death, Jill has spent decades trying to put the past behind her—but discovers the only path forward is to reckon with history." - She Writes Press Local author Carolyn Porter (Marcel’s Letters: A Font and the Search for One Man’s Fate) will join Swenson in conversation. Books will be available for purchase from Valley Bookseller after the event. Registration recommended but not required.
