Slow and Shifting Light

At dawn and dusk, we see light move ardently throughout the trees, hills, and rivers. This glow showcases wondrous colors, interesting textures, and gilded forms that we do not often see. The late Don Biehn and fellow Plein Air artist Megan Miller paint the shifting landscapes around them, while photographer Lars Samuelsson and potter Adam Gruetzmacher dive deeper into intentionality in their processes. Sunset on the St. Croix Paddle

Unwind after a busy day with a leisurely evening paddle on the St. Croix. On this paddle we will start and end at the same point, allowing us the freedom to explore the area around Hudson from the wide river. Watch the sun color the bluffs and hills of the Riverway in shimmering gold and take in the colors as dusk falls. Enjoy the community of the river as we all enjoy a summer evening under the setting sun. Meet your Wild Rivers Conservancy Paddle Guides! Owen has been planning and leading events as the Outdoor Program Coordinator at the Conservancy since 2024. Previously he has worked as an outdoor guide leading canoe and backpacking expeditions throughout North America, and as an adaptive ski instructor in the mountains of Colorado. He is a certified Wilderness First Responder and trained in risk management for a multitude of outdoor settings. October is the Conservancy's Outdoor Program Specialist and an avid outdoorsman throughout the midwest. He has been kayaking and fishing since his youth, and adventured up and down the coast from Washington to Alaska. He now resides in the St. Croix valley and has years of experience guiding throughout his favorite places along the Riverway. Details: This is a fully supported paddle. Unforgotten Washington County Stories from the Korean War

Presented by Washington County Parks at Washington County Historic Courthouse Stillwater, MN

The Korean War (1950–1953) is often called the “Forgotten War,” overshadowed by World War II that ended just five years earlier. But in Washington County, it is anything but forgotten. Eleven local men were killed in action during the war, and their stories continue to live on in the memories of families, friends, and the community they left behind. Their service, sacrifice, and experiences form a powerful chapter in our shared history. Visit the Washington County Historic Courthouse to explore an exhibit that brings these stories to life.

Superior: A 50-Year Photographic Journey with Craig Blacklock

Presented by Stillwater Public Library at Stillwater Public Library Stillwater, MN

This 60-minute presentation takes the audience on a stunning visual voyage around the world's largest freshwater lake by surface area. Drawing from five decades of photography, Craig will share the stories, challenges, and changing landscapes behind the lens, capturing Lake Superior’s raw power and quiet moments. It is an engaging mix of learning to pay attention, art, history, and travelogue that appeals deeply to photography enthusiasts, cabin owners, and nature lovers alike. The first 20 minutes will include a video, Lessons from Superior, first developed for a talk to the U of M Center for Spirituality and Healing, where Craig is a senior fellow. Following the video, Craig will take the audience around the lake, giving them specific information about geology, human history, and a few personal experiences. The program will end with Q&A and book sales signing. Books will be available for purchase at the event. Registration is not required but it is encouraged.

River Falls: 250 Years Ago

1776 TWO WORLDS, ONE YEAR When Americans declared independence in 1776, the future River Falls area was not an empty frontier waiting to be settled. It was part of a living Indigenous landscape-a shared homeland and borderland where Dakota (Sioux) and Anishinaabe/Ojibwe (Chippewa) peoples maintained deep connections to the land and waterways of the St. Croix Valley. While revolution transformed Britain's Atlantic colonies more than 1,000 miles to the east, the Kinnickinnic and St. Croix valleys remained part of a long-inhabited Indigenous landscape. The community known today as River Falls would not be founded for another seventy years.

Standing Cedars: Wildlife Ecology and Management

Explore how wildlife, forests, and prairies fit together at Standing Cedars. Chris Cold will present, "Wildlife Ecology and Management", a comprehensive account of the needs of wildlife and the factors which regulate wildlife populations. He will describe the physical and biological components of forests, wetlands and grasslands and the methods employed by agencies and individuals in managing landscapes to achieve an appropriate richness and abundance of species. Learn the values of wildlife and the sound justification for the continued tenure of wildlife in our communities. As a retired wildlife technician and educator for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Bureau of Wildlife Management, Cold is well qualified to discusses the practice of predator control, and predator/prey relationships. Cold is a proponent of active participation in wildlife-based recreation and harvest activities. He will briefly discuss hunter ethics and the future of hunting, trapping and fishing.This event is free and open to the public. Doors open at 6:00 PM, with the program beginning at 6:30 PM. Becoming Witness

A House Unbuilt invites the public to the opening reception for Becoming Witness, a collection of map-inspired pieces and hand-made ceramic vessels by Matt Dooley. This new body of work is an invitation to shift perspective from an aerial view to one of grounding and connection, “becoming witness” to our surroundings once again. The “map view” that we are all so familiar with has become an increasingly common way to interact with our environment. While ubiquitous, such a view can encourage a false sense of separation between ourselves and our environment, reducing it to a concept, making it ripe for objectification, manipulation, and control. From this perspective, we assume a position of authority, looking down, all seeing, in-control, as if we were God. Map-inspired pieces on the wall of the gallery tell a story of environmental exploitation, whereas hand-made ceramic vessels draw viewers to the floor, encouraging a sense of connection and grounding. Through this dropping down, Dooley hopes that we can begin to dissolve the sense of separation between ourselves and all things, encouraging an attitude of care, connection, and love for the places in which we live. Art Gallery Exhibition This fall, Belwin is hosting a gallery exhibition, Worlds Within Worlds, featuring the work of painter Suyao Tian. In this exhibition, Suyao Tian will presents a series of abstract, water-based paintings that respond to the natural rhythms and quiet presence of Belwin. Worlds Within Worlds is ultimately about connection — between visible and invisible realities, between humans and nonhuman life, between imagination and memory, and between the intimate and the infinite. Every system, being, memory, landscape, or form contains another hidden world inside it — layered, interconnected, and continuously unfolding. Suyao Tian’s artistic language is deeply shaped by her childhood experiences growing up as a single child during China’s one-child policy in the 1980s. “Cultural expectations and a highly competitive, exam-oriented education system emphasized memorization over critical thinking and imagination, affecting both school and family life for an entire generation. For me, the absence of siblings, the inability to have pets, and limited social interaction led to isolation and a lack of confidence. Nature became my primary source of communication and emotional expression. As a child, I spent time collecting small insects, placing them in jars, talking to them, and playing with them—they became my earliest listeners.” This exhibition will be on view at Belwin's Savanna Center at 795 Indian Trail S.
