Wheels of Murder author talk
Presented by Washington County Historical Society at Warden's House Museum Stillwater, MN
Washington County Historical Society Saturday, September 12 • 5:30 p.m. Warden’s House Museum, Stillwater Author Talk: Wheels of Murder: The 1896 Bank Robbery That Shocked a Small Prairie Town The Washington County Historical Society will welcome Minnesota author Jeff Sauve to the Warden’s House Museum on Saturday, Sept. 12 at 5:30 p.m. for a presentation on his new true‑crime history, Wheels of Murder: The 1896 Bank Robbery That Shocked a Small Prairie Town. Sauve’s program will highlight inmate 4717, Lew Kellihan, one of the most notorious bank robbers held at Stillwater State Prison at the turn of the 19th century, alongside Cole and Jim Younger, members of the infamous James‑Younger Gang who attempted to rob the Northfield bank in 1876. Wheels of Murder recounts Lew and his teenage brother Hans’s dramatic 1896 heist in Sherburn, Martin County, Minnesota—the world’s first bank robbery executed on bicycles—and the intense 150‑mile manhunt that swept across southern Minnesota and northern Iowa. About the Presenter Sauve is an award‑winning Minnesota writer and historian whose work has appeared in regional magazines, historical society publications, and museum programs. A former archivist at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, he is the author of several books, including Murder at Minnesota Point (North Star Editions, 2022), winner of a bronze IPPY Award for Midwest nonfiction and a gold Northeast Minnesota Book Award. Presented by St. Croix 360 at Paddlefish Adventures Saint Croix Falls, WI
The complex web of life found along the St. Croix has been evolving since the last glaciers left the area about 12,000 years ago. Learn about the forces that created forest and prairie, savanna and wetland, and the unique plants and animals that support diverse wildlife, and how they are still at work. The type of habitat and wildlife found in the region at the beginning of European settlement, how it arrived at that point, and how it continues to shift. (Take home a booklet with Greg’s wildlife photos.) “Layers of St. Croix History” trips will offer a relaxing paddle down the river as Greg Seitz shares stories about unique aspects of the river’s past. These seven-mile trips will take you past geologic features, natural wonders, and important places for human history. Becoming Witness
Presented by A House Unbuilt at A House Unbuilt Stillwater, MN
A House Unbuilt invites the public to the opening reception for Becoming Witness, a collection of map-inspired pieces and hand-made ceramic vessels by Matt Dooley. This new body of work is an invitation to shift perspective from an aerial view to one of grounding and connection, “becoming witness” to our surroundings once again. The “map view” that we are all so familiar with has become an increasingly common way to interact with our environment. While ubiquitous, such a view can encourage a false sense of separation between ourselves and our environment, reducing it to a concept, making it ripe for objectification, manipulation, and control. From this perspective, we assume a position of authority, looking down, all seeing, in-control, as if we were God. Map-inspired pieces on the wall of the gallery tell a story of environmental exploitation, whereas hand-made ceramic vessels draw viewers to the floor, encouraging a sense of connection and grounding. Through this dropping down, Dooley hopes that we can begin to dissolve the sense of separation between ourselves and all things, encouraging an attitude of care, connection, and love for the places in which we live. Join us for the opening reception August 28, 6-8pm, refreshments will be provided and Dooley will give an artist’s talk. We also invite you to join us for a series of guided meditations in the gallery led by artist and yoga teacher Matt Dooley. Every Saturday will begin with a grounding ceremony, followed by a half-hour sit intended to drop us…
