Becoming Witness

A House Unbuilt invites the public to the opening reception for Becoming Witness, a collection of map-inspired pieces and hand-made ceramic vessels by Matt Dooley. This new body of work is an invitation to shift perspective from an aerial view to one of grounding and connection, “becoming witness” to our surroundings once again. The “map view” that we are all so familiar with has become an increasingly common way to interact with our environment. While ubiquitous, such a view can encourage a false sense of separation between ourselves and our environment, reducing it to a concept, making it ripe for objectification, manipulation, and control. From this perspective, we assume a position of authority, looking down, all seeing, in-control, as if we were God. Map-inspired pieces on the wall of the gallery tell a story of environmental exploitation, whereas hand-made ceramic vessels draw viewers to the floor, encouraging a sense of connection and grounding. Through this dropping down, Dooley hopes that we can begin to dissolve the sense of separation between ourselves and all things, encouraging an attitude of care, connection, and love for the places in which we live. We also invite you to join us for a series of guided meditations in the gallery led by artist and yoga teacher Matt Dooley. River Falls: 250 Years Ago

1776 TWO WORLDS, ONE YEAR When Americans declared independence in 1776, the future River Falls area was not an empty frontier waiting to be settled. It was part of a living Indigenous landscape-a shared homeland and borderland where Dakota (Sioux) and Anishinaabe/Ojibwe (Chippewa) peoples maintained deep connections to the land and waterways of the St. Croix Valley. While revolution transformed Britain's Atlantic colonies more than 1,000 miles to the east, the Kinnickinnic and St. Croix valleys remained part of a long-inhabited Indigenous landscape. The community known today as River Falls would not be founded for another seventy years.

Unforgotten Washington County Stories from the Korean War

The Korean War (1950–1953) is often called the “Forgotten War,” overshadowed by World War II that ended just five years earlier. But in Washington County, it is anything but forgotten. Eleven local men were killed in action during the war, and their stories continue to live on in the memories of families, friends, and the community they left behind. Their service, sacrifice, and experiences form a powerful chapter in our shared history. Visit the Washington County Historic Courthouse to explore an exhibit that brings these stories to life.

Author Talk and Book Signing – Eric Dregni “Vikings in the Attic”

Hear author Eric Dregni make a presentation about writing his book, Vikings in the Attic: In Search of Nordic America. In his book, Eric tracks down and explores the significant — often bizarre — historic sites, tales, and traditions of Scandinavia’s peculiar colony in the Midwest. Eric reveals the little-known tales that lie beneath the surface of Nordic America and proves by example why generations of Scandinavian-Americans have come to love and cherish these tales and traditions so dearly. After the presentation, Eric will be available for signing copies of his book which are available for purchase in the museum’s gift shop, the Scandia Butik. Eric Dregni is an associate professor of English at Concordia University in St. Paul. He is the author of several books, including Midwest Marvels (2006), In Cod We Trust: Living the Norwegian Dream (2008), and Never Trust a Thin Cook (2009), all published by the University of Minnesota Press. During the summer, he is the dean of the Italian Concordia Language Village in northern Minnesota. He lives in Minneapolis. With Shadow Puppetry a form that elicits the fantastic, the humorous in a magical and fun filled way. Welcome to Shadow Puppetry! Shadow Puppetry is an ancient yet contemporary form of animation. Using cut silhouettes, light, a screen and sound, students will learn basic puppet fabrication techniques, develop content with the goal to create a short table top Shadow Play for an in-class performance.
