Earth Day is My Birthday

By Linda Kelley

I remember well the first Earth Day, April 22, 1970. That day was also my 24th Birthday. It wasn’t the happiest of birthdays, as my husband Jim was serving as a combat medic in Vietnam, we had been married for 21 months at this time. My husband Jim sent me a card for my birthday, a recycled one at that. Someone in his platoon had gotten a birthday card at some point & he gave it to Jim to use. Jim cut part of it off, refolded it, drew a cake with 24 candles on it and wrote on it, I’m sending this to say I love you and I miss you. Happy Birthday!” Love, Jim The card looked like it had been dragged through the mud, but it is precious to me. How appropriate that it was a recycled card, on this first Earth Day!
